The Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) announced that until the first half of 2021, 1 million 281,370 companies were registered, of which 71% of companies registered in Peru belong to the retail sector, while 23% are dedicated to the wholesale trade.
Óscar Chávez, head of the Institute of Economics and Business Development (IEDEP) of the CCL, said that more than 60% of the people who create companies are women. On the other hand, he mentioned that 77% of the companies created are owned by individuals with a business.
Likewise, Chávez mentioned that the wage bill is recovering from February 2021 and, on average, is 5% higher than in 2019. “Our projection is that sales in the retail sector will grow 11, 3% in the last quarter of 2021 compared to the last quarter of 2020 ″, he indicated.

Growth in the economy
On the other hand, he reported that the Peruvian economy will achieve growth of 11,2% in the present year. However, this result would not exceed the levels of the prepandemic, since to exceed the levels of 2019, Peru should register a rate of 12.5% with a strong reactivation in the sectors of commerce, services and mining.
The head of IEDEP – CCL explained that the growth is increasing. “Precisely for the third quarter of this year we estimate that the Peruvian GDP would have grown at 11,5%, surpassing what was achieved in 2019 (3.3%) ”, highlighted Óscar Chávez during his presentation at the VI Retail Forum: challenges in the digital age.
It should be noted that the construction and manufacturing sectors would achieve an advance of 29,3% and 19,2%, being the ones that had the greatest growth this year.
By 2022, Chávez projected that Peru’s GDP growth would stand at 3.1%. This would be in line with the expansion estimated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Latin America and the Caribbean (3%).
“This responds to the rare and complex economic policies applied by some countries in the region, a situation that we hope will not deepen,” said Óscar Chávez.
