How have the heavy rains affected the main products of the basic food basket?

The intense rainfall caused by Cyclone Yaku continues to affect the population. In the Mercado Modelo de Chiclayo, there has been a price increase in many products of the basic basket. Foods like chicken or yellow potatoes have increased in cost, but tomatoes and caigua have doubled their value.

This is how the products have varied

These are the products of the basic basket that have undergone changes in their prices:

  • Carrot: S/6 x kg (up S/2)
  • Tomato: S/4 x kg (up S/2)
  • Spinach: S/4 x 1/4 kg (up S/1.50)
  • Squash: S/4 x kg (up S/1.50)
  • Onion: S/3 x kg (up S/1)
  • Caigua: S/12 x kg (doubled its price)
  • Cassava: S/3.50 x kg (up S/0.50).

Other products have maintained their cost despite the emergency registered in the region. Chicken, Yungay potato, yellow potato, pea and lemon have maintained their price.

On the other hand, passion fruit decreased in value by S/1 and now costs S/5 per kilo. Market traders report that sales have decreased as a result of the rains. The start of the school season has also affected sales.

The Cayanca sector, where the market is located, has been flooded by the rains. The businessmen affirm that they have had to pay to throw the water that entered the premises.
