The rainfall recorded in the north of the country continues to wreak havoc on citizens. The overflow of the Piura River occurred and hundreds of cultivated hectares have been affected due to the increase in flow. Farmers in the area indicated that losses of 7 million soles have been generated and are asking the authorities for help. The disaster occurred in the town of San Juan de Curumuy, in Piura.
The growers demanded better prevention work by the authorities, since these floods are recurrent when there is an emergency due to rain. “The floods come from the year 83. In 2017 this was also generated. The authorities came, took the photo and left,” said an affected farmer.
In declarations for La República, Miguel Meca, president of the Irrigation Commission of the Medio Piura Margin Derecha, pointed out that farmers have lost all the money invested for this harvest and are now in debt. They work with private banking entities through loans.
According to the statements of those affected, one hectare of organic banana cultivation costs approximately 30,000 soles. The price varies depending on the fruit grown. Meca reported that there are 690 affected hectares of lemon, mango and banana cultivation.
