Lemon price increased by 19% due to rains in the north, according to the BCRP

So far in March, the lemon price It has increased by around 19% as a result of the heavy rains that are registered in the north of the country, revealed the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP). However, the entity explained that this rise will be temporary because this behavior is due to a conjunctural factor.

“Coincidentally, these rains could have an impact on the prices of some foods that are produced in the northern region, such as lemons. They have been seeing some increases in the case of lemon of around 19% so far this month“, pointed out Carlos Montoro, BCRP Monetary Policy Manager, during the presentation of the March 2023 Monetary Program.

Another food that has been presenting an increase in its value is the chicken as a result of the increase in cases of avian flu in birds, which causes a lower supply of this product; to this is also added the lesser access to the soybean cakeone of the main sources of protein for the food of this bird.

“This has reduced the supply and increased the price (of chicken). It is expected that in the following months, as the impact of some measures is seen, such as the importation of fertile eggs and the vaccination of birds, production will begin to normalize of the chicken and that will reduce the price in the following months”, projected the BCRP official.

Likewise, Montoro pointed out that, just as there have been products that have increased their value, there are also others that have been presenting a reduction in their price, as is the case of White potatowhich fell 27% so far this month.
