The third strand in the Astigarraga-Irun section will be finished by the end of 2024

The work of laying the third thread in the section between Astigarraga and Irun will conclude at the end of 2024, according to the forecasts that it manages Adifwhich will make it possible to reestablish the two routes and recover normality in the circulation of Surroundingsaltered since work began in 2017.
The general director of Adif AV, Juan Pablo Villanueva, has advanced this deadline in a visit to the Gaintxurizketa tunnel, in which he has been accompanied by the Minister of Transport, Iñaki Arriola, and the delegate of the Government of Spain in the Basque Autonomous Community , Denis Itxaso.
As Villanueva has pointed out, once the extension of this tunnel it will continue with those of Capuchinos (196 meters) and Loiola (288 meters) and will carry out the same operation in the four overpasses and the two existing pedestrian walkways in the section.
The placement of the third threadwhich will allow the joint use of the layout for the circulation of high-speed trains and Iberian gauge, was put on hold in 2018when 200 meters of the tunnel had been executed, with the entry into bankruptcy of the company that carried them out.
Adif returned to tender the project and works began in february 2022 which will give continuity to the Vitoria-Bilbao-San Sebastián High Speed Line and will allow the connection with the French border through the Madrid-Hendaia line.
