The Government of France has agreed on Monday with the main retail chains to create an “anti-inflation” shopping basket to guarantee basic necessities at low cost and alleviate the impact of rising prices on consumers. Each distributor will decide which basic products will be included in that basket, which will carry a common label under the name “anti-inflation quarter“.
The French Economy Minister, Bruno Le Maire, has explained to the media that these products will have “the lowest possible price” at the expense of distribution margins, not of farmers or industrialists, and it will mean a global cost of “several hundred million euros” in that quarter. “It will be a massive, effective and protective device,” Le Maire stressed.
The new “anti-inflation” basket is expected to be launched in the following days. The minister has said that this measure is intended to “protect our compatriots as best as possible against rising prices” and to apply the principle that “the cost of inflation must be shared.”
There will not be a common list of products, nor a minimum of products, but each chain will decide which and how many to choose, but all those selected will carry a common logo with the colors of the French flag and the inscription “anti-inflation quarter”.
The minister has also advanced that when this new measure ends in June, he will ask the industrialists to reopen the price negotiations with the distribution groups, without waiting for the beginning of next year. In this way, he wants industrialists to lower their sales prices if the trends of recent days are confirmed.
