Employment in Metropolitan Lima close to recovering prepandemic levels

Between July and October of this year, the occupied population of Metropolitan Lima amounted to 4 million 714,400 people, a figure that compared to the same period in 2020 increased by 21.7%, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). ) in the technical report on the Labor Market Situation in Metropolitan Lima, prepared with the results of the Permanent Employment Survey (EPE).

This figure, compared to the same quarter of 2019 (prepandemic), decreased by 4.4%, which means that around 217,200 people have not yet managed to regain their jobs.

On the other hand, the employed population with adequate employment; In other words, the contracted workers and with all the benefits of the law, stood at 2 million 481,100 people, which in comparison with the same quarter of the year 2020 grew by 39.7%; However, when compared to 2019, it contracted by 22.7% (-729,600 people).

Likewise, as reported by the INEI, the underemployed population reached 2 million 233,400 people, increasing by 6.6% (137,200 people) when compared to the same quarter of 2020 and reported an increase of 29.8% (512,500 people) compared to similar quarter of 2019.

Results at the national level

According to the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO), in the third quarter of this year, the employed population of the country totaled 16 million 964,200 people, growing 16.9% compared to the same period last year.

However, the figure is 1.4% lower (-235,300 people) when compared to the same quarter of 2019, according to the INEI in the technical report Peru: Behavior of Labor Market Indicators at the National Level.

The employed population increased 21.5% in urban areas (2 million 293,400 people); and in rural areas, 4.3% (163,400 people), compared to the same quarter of 2020.

While, when compared with the July-August-September quarter of 2019, it decreased 3% in the urban area, but grew 4.3% in the rural area.
