Inflation 2023: what are the products that rose and fell in price the most in February?

In February, the Consumer Price Index for Metropolitan Lima rose 0.29%. Furthermore, in the last year, the rise was 8.64%. According to the INEI, of the 586 products that make up the family basket, 385 registered price increases. Which are?

During February 2023, Inflation in Metropolitan Lima presented an advance of 0.29% and accumulated growth of 8.64% during the last 12 months, according to the recent report of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that there was an increase, mainly, in the items of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.60%), Education (0.78%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.53%) and Transport (0.26%). According to the INEI report, the monthly rise in prices in Lima was offset by the reduction in Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (-1.03%).

What products went up and down the most in February?

In February 2023, of the 586 products that make up the family basket, 385 registered price increases, 103 decreased and 98 showed no change.

The products that increased in price the most during February 2023 in Metropolitan Lima are made up of strawberries (+15.70%), leeks (+15.14%), mango (+11.32%) beetroot (+10.80% ), eviscerated chicken (+10.78%), green bean (+8.35%) and dried potato (+8.13%).

In addition, the products with the highest incidence in the Consumer’s price index —the most consumed and the ones that give the greatest weight to the result of the inflation— that increased their cost are eviscerated chicken (10.78%), chicken eggs (6.02%), non-state school enrollment expenses (15.14%), restaurant menus (0.49%) and gasohol (2.63%)

On the contrary, in the list of the products that decreased their value the most in February 2023 there are hake (-8.63%), white grapes (-8.73%), blueberries (-9.07%), strong avocado (-9.34%), white potatoes (-10 76%), bonito (-14.20%), potato huayro (-20.19%) and yellow potato (-21.11).

While in the group with the highest incidence of inflation, the price reduction of the electricity tariff (-4.01%), yellow potato (-21.11%), white potato (-10.76%), bonito ( -14.20%) and strong avocado (-9.34%).

What is the price variation in the cities of the country?

According to the INEI report, in February, 25 cities in Peru registered a price increase. Those that registered the highest variations are Puerto Maldonado (2.44%), Pucallpa (1.34%), Tacna (1.19%), Abancay (1.14%) and Cusco (1.09%). In the range between 0.75% and 0.50%, Ayacucho (0.74%), Cerro de Pasco (0.54%), Tarapoto (0.65%), Ica (0.60%) are located. and Trujillo (0.58%).
