Petroperú prepares first delivery of 200,000 barrels of diesel

Own production. Minem highlighted the daily output of 40,000 barrels achieved at the New Talara Refinery. Margins will drive prices down.

Petroperú reported the entry into the Peruvian market of the first batch of 200,000 barrels of diesel (8 million 400,000 gallons) produced at the New Talara Refinery, the result of one of the three new desulfurization units that the complex has.

This unit, the plant of Diesel Hydrotreating (HTD), produces gasoline and diesel with less than 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, in accordance with current regulations to preserve the country’s air quality and the health of Peruvians.

In dialogue with La República, Minister Oscar Vera specified that the Coypu ship, which will transport the derivative, will carry out the distribution in the terminals of Eten, Salaverry, Conchán and Callao. The latter will arrive next Tuesday the 28th for unloading and distribution to areas in the interior of the country.

“It is part of our objective to distribute the production of Talara throughout the country. This shipment is iconic, as it marks the beginning of the nationwide sale of low-sulfur diesel, with the quality that only NRT offers.. This is definitely positive for all Peruvians,” he assured.

Minister Vera stressed that the next shipment should be ready just 3 or 4 days later, since the refinery complex is working with a daily production of 40,000 barrels of this fuel. With this, the NRT continues with this progressive start that, up to now, has meant not only the opportunity for Petroperú to multiply its profit margins per barrel of oil by up to ten, but has managed to compensate, in some way, the US $1,000 million that the Peruvian State contributed in October 2022 to settle its commitments, through the payment of US$1,600 million in taxes during its construction.

NRT: soft start to full

walter canovaVice President of Refining and Industrial Processes at Ecopetrol (Colombia), highlighted the “rigor and discipline” shown by Petroperú to start up each unit of the NRT.

The specialist, with 30 years of experience in the sector, explained that the construction of the New Cartagena Refinery (200,000 barrels per day) occurred between 2010 and 2015 with a gradual start-up process that culminated in 2017.

Approach:

Oscar Vera Gargurevich, Minister of Energy and Mines:

“Diesel was already being sold at the Talara sales plant. With this, we reduce imports and we will generate significant income that will allow us to have competitive prices.”.

NRT will be able to refine 95,000 barrels of oil at the end of its gradual start-up.

$40 per barrel is the profit margin that Petroperú expects to earn. Before it was US$5.
