The Basque Consumer Institute-Kontsumobide registered 28,645 complaints last year, of which 6,383 were motivated by telephone and telecommunications services, which, although they remain the sector that motivates the most complaints from consumers, experienced a 20% decrease compared to 2021, while complaints related to energy and water supply services increased by 89% and now represent 13% of the total.

The Basque Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Consumption, Javier Hurtado, presented this Friday, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Kontsumobide’s activity report for 2022, at a press conference in which the director of the Basque Consumer Institute also took part , Laura Alzola.

Kontsumobide experienced last year a growth in online processing of claims (which accounted for only 9% in 2019). In 2022, the electronic route was already used in 50.5% of the complaints, with which, for the first time, more than half of the claims, complaints and reports filed in this body have been registered online.

The counselor explained that the claims have increased “slightly” to reach 28,645.

Hurtardo has indicated that “the vast majority” have dealt with claims that have not ended in sanctioning proceduressince they were not due to infractions, but to “all the novelties introduced in the invoices, which have generated many doubts among consumers.”

However, last year this body processed 521 disciplinary proceedings: 145 in Álava, 217 in Gipuzkoa and 159 in Bizkaia. In total, 77 files have been filed against companies belonging to the household appliance sector (which includes computer equipment and audiovisual material), 52 against companies in the telephone sector, 50 against companies in the vehicle repair sector, and 27 against companies in the ‘ vehicles’.
