Dairy farmers criticize Gloria’s labeling

Evaporated milk is one of the main dairy products consumed by Peruvians, where the blue jar of milk glory; However, its current labeling would mislead users since it says “reconstituted milk”, according to the Association of Dairy Farmers of Peru (Agalep).

The current milk regulation states that this product should not bear the name “milk”, and the complaint has already been formally filed by the union before the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi ).

“We cannot allow this milk, wrongly called reconstituted milk; first, milk in large letters and reconstituted in small letters; mislead the consumer. Second, according to Codex dairy terms, this product should not be called recombined or reconstituted milk, but rather be called ‘reconstituted milk product’, with letters of the same size, so that the consumer can identify it at first sight,” said Javier Valera, a member of the Agalep Board of Directorsduring an event organized by Conveagro, where the preliminary report of the dairy sector prepared by Indecopi was analyzed.

In this regard, Rodolfo Tupayachi, an economist at this entity, pointed out that they have been informed of this matter (regarding labeling) and that the consumer protection areas are “addressing concerns on this matter.”

For its part, the Gloria company told this newspaper that it has not been notified of any complaint about its blue jar.

“Our emblematic Gloria blue label milk is a product that has accompanied the growth of several generations of Peruvians. Adopting the name reconstituted milk enriched with vitamins A and D allows us to maintain the same nutritional value, flavor, consistency and creaminess as always”, they specified.
