Textile Mypes reject the position of the MEF: “Application of safeguards are not dangerous measures”

Businessmen point out that the increase in imports of Chinese garments is causing serious damage and measures would help to mitigate the imbalance in the market.

The business associations in the textile sector have communicated their rejection of the pronouncement of the current Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Alex Contreras, against the application of safeguards to the importation of Asian clothing.

Safeguards are not dangerous measures, as the minister irresponsibly asserts. In fact, it is a mechanism approved by the World Trade Organization (WTO) which specifies that its application occurs only when there is an increase in imports and serious damage or a threat of serious damage caused by that increase, which which has been evidenced in preliminary reports from Indecopi”, can be read in the letter from the Mypes.

As recalled, last Monday, February 20, during the conference to present the Con Punche Peru Tourism plan, the head of the MEF reiterated his position against these measures, which he described as “dangerous.”

“It must be understood that the safeguards are not mechanisms that reactivate, on the contrary, it can be very dangerous. It is a temporary protection system, but in the end it can generate what is known as retaliatory measures. When you put a measure in place to try to protect yourself , what the other countries do is also (implement other similar measures) and considering the weight of Peru in international trade, we do not have much bargaining power, and on the contrary, many mypes would be hit,” Contreras explained.

It should be noted that this Thursday the multisectoral commission will meet to evaluate the application of safeguards to garments of Asian origin. This is a request from the businessmen of the textile industry, who hope that it can attenuate the imbalance that currently exists in the market.

“There is a process of safeguards in which we are pending and that the government of Dina Boluarte still does not want to even discuss,” said Susana Saldaña, president of the Gamarra Peru Business Association, before La República. “We believe that they do not want to discuss the issue for fear of importer lobbies,” he added.
