Passenger traffic at Peruvian airports exceeded the world average in 2022, according to Ositrán

At the end of 2022, the level of passengers represented 84% of that reached in 2019.

He passenger traffic in Peruvian airports it is recovered with the gradual reactivation of flights. At the end of 2022, the level of passengers represented 84% of that reached in 2019, reported the Supervisory Agency for Public Use Transportation Infrastructure (Ositrán). The regulator stressed that Although the levels prior to the pandemic were not reached, the world average of 75.4% was exceeded compared to the same year, according to data provided by the International Air Transport Association-IATA.

In its “Aeronautical Sector Recovery and Perspectives Report”, Ositrán specified that in 2019 passenger traffic reached 38.4 million and in 2022, it reached 31.5 million; 65.3% more than in 2021 when it reached 19.1 million.

National and international flights

The level of passengers on domestic flights had a faster recovery and reached 88% (24.5 million passengers) of what was registered in 2019, compared to 66% (7 million passengers) of international flights (including transit).

The document highlights that, since July 2022, the flow of passengers begins to approach the levels of the same months of 2019 and the rate of recovery varied between the main airports; such is the case that the terminals of Tarapoto, Trujillo, Juliaca, Cajamarca and Ayacucho reached or exceeded the pre-pandemic figures.

Meanwhile, international flights show a slower pace of recovery. Between January and December 2022, monthly traffic went from representing 50% to 75% of what was registered in the same months of 2019, respectively.

The recovery of passenger traffic varied according to destinations. The United States, Chile, Colombia and Spain remain the main destinations. Only flights to Panama and the Dominican Republic reached pre-pandemic levels.

Outlook for 2023

Although the levels of passengers achieved exceed the global results, the prospects for 2023 are uncertain in the midst of a deep economic and social crisis that, among other things, directly affects air traffic, reduction of tourism and temporary closure of airports, and indirectly, slowdown of the economy that affects the demand for transportation.

It is estimated that close to 111,500 domestic flight passengers were affected by the temporary closure of some airports in January.
