Government announces plan to reduce poverty in the country

Target set. Of the 8.5 million poor people left behind by the pandemic, with the National Development and Social Inclusion Policy, the indicator would drop to about 5.2 million. Executive assures that they will not only focus on economic needs.

The COVID-19 caused Peru to go back 10 years in terms of the fight against poverty, since 9.8 million people fell with this condition during 2020. By the bicentennial, despite the rebound effect that catapulted the economy to 13.3%, only 1.2 million compatriots managed to get out of poverty. Since then, the latest data recorded by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) specifies that 25.9% of the population is poor (see infographic).

Reduce poverty to 15%

As a result, The Government of Dina Boluarte launched yesterday the National Policy for Development and Social Inclusion (PNDIS) by 2030, with which it seeks to reduce poverty to 15% in the next seven years, a level never before registered in Peru. In calculations of INEI, we will be 35 million 792,000 inhabitants in 2030 and, considering that the target rate is 15%, the universe of poor will fall back to 5.2 million.

In the words of Dina Boluarte, It is not enough to attend to the monetary poverty “that fills our bellies with food”, but it is necessary to solve problems such as access to water or drainage and improve the infrastructure of schools, roads and markets, as well as give homes quality connectivity and identification with the arrival of Reniec “to the farthest of the homeland”.

On the other hand, The head of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), Julio Demartini, specified that the PNDIS represents the first step to gain ground against poverty, which —according to specialists previously consulted— would have risen again to 30% of the population in 2022 and would remain until 2027 at the threshold of 25%.

“Although we have made progress in the fight against poverty and in the tasks to resolve inequalities, a turning point is required to achieve better results (…), not only with bonuses that are not necessary in complex times like the one we are living in “added the official.

Do not leave aside the Venezuelan population

Igor Garafulic, resident coordinator of the UN in Peru, he argued that the PNDIS is a key instrument to achieve peace and end social exclusion from a human development and legal approach. Along these lines, he pointed out that “despite not being explicitly mentioned in the plan”, the Government seeks to include groups not considered, such as the million and a half Venezuelan refugees in Peru, who “not only have significant needs”, but also they also represent “a potential and great asset for the country if they are fully integrated.”

IMF calls for tackling poverty

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) urged Peru to accelerate structural reforms to boost economic activity, and address inequality, poverty, and deficiencies in the education and health systems.

On the other hand, an official from Pensión 65 in Puno indicated that the lack of bills in the Banco de la Nación agencies prevents 61,852 beneficiaries from receiving their economic subsidy of S/250.
