In eight months, the Government expects to start directing fuel subsidies. The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Darío Herrera, confirmed on February 14 that its implementation will begin in September or October 2023. He had previously announced that by then the pilot plan would be ready at gas stations.

“We have a road map with various state institutions. We will implement technology so that subsidies are effectively delivered to the people who need them most and are temporary. We will start implementing targeting in September, October this year,” he said in an interview with the public channel Ecuador TV.

Fuel subsidies to reach $4.56 billion in 2022, double 2021

In 2022, public funds allocated to these subsidies doubled compared to 2021. Thus, between one year and the next, they increased from $2,214 million to $4,560 million.

The minister showed how these subsidies are distributed and pointed out that 63.8 percent falls on the automotive sector, while the tuna sector represents 2.25 percent, and the fishing sector 1.07 percent.

Fuels that have a government subsidy are extra and ecopain gasoline, whose price is frozen at $2.40 per gallon, and diesel, which also remains at $1.75, prices reduced as a result of the June 2022 suspension and the installation of dialogue tables .
