Peruvian agricultural exports break records and exceed US$9.8 billion in 2022

Shipments of coffee, blueberries and grapes increased mainly.

Peruvian agricultural exports reached a new record in 2022 after reaching US$9,807 million, a figure 12.3% higher than that reported in 2021, reported the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur). This important achievement was mainly due to the increase in shipments of products such as coffee, blueberries and grapes, among others.

“Peru continues to grow internationally, positioning its agricultural products in 133 markets around the world. More than 2,700 Peruvian exporters registered agricultural sales in 2022. 57% of our exports in this area go to the countries of our continent, 33% are sent to Europe and 10% reach Asia”, highlighted Minister Luis Fernando Helguero.

Fruit exports grew 4% in the same period and accounted for 51% of total domestic agricultural shipments. Blueberry sales reached US$1,401 million (+14.9%), grape sales amounted to US$1,362 million (+8.9%) and mandarin sales rose to US$251 million (+4.9%), according to the last Monthly Trade Report.

In addition, lemon exports increased 34.7% compared to 2021, totaling US$65 million. The growth in sales of these goods offset the lower sales of avocados, affected in 2022 by low prices.

Likewise, vegetable transactions rose (+5.5%). Between January and December 2022, shipments of chili peppers and peppers totaled US$319 million (+11.1%); artichoke, US$157 million (+3.8%); and onion, US$106 million (+5%). The higher sales of these goods offset the lower sales of asparagus, which fell to US$508 million (-5.3%).

What are the main destinations for Peruvian products?

The United States continues to be the main destination for Peruvian agricultural exports (35% of the total). In 2022, agricultural exports to this country amounted to US$3,414 million, a value 16.6% higher than that reported in 2021. Peru is its main supplier of blueberries and the second of grapes, avocados, asparagus, and fresh onions.

The European Union is positioned in second place, with 28% of shipments of agricultural products. Throughout 2022, Peruvian exports of this sector to member nations totaled US$ 2,776 million, a figure that represents a growth of 5.7% compared to the previous year.

Ecuador, for its part, is the third main destination for Peruvian exports in this area and, therefore, the first in Latin America. It occupies 4% of the total and at the end of the year it totaled US$437 million, thus registering a significant increase of 52% compared to what was obtained in 2021.
