In the midst of great expectations, the first of the four editions that Aquaexpo will have in 2023 began in the province of Santa Elena, this Wednesday, February 8, organized by the National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA), a union that also celebrates 30 years of creation.

The meeting brings together, until this Thursday, February 9, at the Salinas Golf & Tennis, 40 exhibiting companies at a trade fair and more than 15 national and foreign experts in a cycle of conferences that will address topics such as the application of new diagnostic tools , updating epidemiological surveillance plans, microbial solutions, new technologies to produce as well as handle live and formulated foods, among others.

In addition, Gabriela Nivelo, director of Aquaexpo Santa Elena, announced the Aquaculture Agenda project, which consists of CNA directors and different authorities making on-site visits to laboratories that produce shrimp larvae in order to train in Topics such as protocol for good laboratory practices, among others.

This in a context in which the production of 12,000 million shrimp larvae throughout the country is reported each month and the province of Santa Elena leads the list by contributing with 65%, since the majority of laboratories dedicated to this activity are It is located in the peninsular territory.

“This event is possible thanks to your hard work, to being the architects that the industry continues to grow and that we are today the most important industry in Ecuador as we are the main producers and exporters of the best shrimp in the world,” said Nivelo during the inauguration of the Aquaexpo.

The importance of the province of Santa Elena in the production of larvae was also exalted by Yahira Piedrahíta, executive director of the CNA.

“We are in the cradle of farmed shrimp, Santa Elena, because it is here where most of the shrimp larvae laboratories are located, this being an important seedbed for the country,” highlighted the executive, who assured that the union has twelve years organizing events in the aquaculture sector in the province.

Like Nivelo, Piedrahita announced that this year the CNA will strengthen the momentum of the Ecuadorian shrimp industry, through training in the territory and inter-institutional efforts to make development projects viable.

Meanwhile, at the opening of the event, the symptoms of economic recovery in the sector were also highlighted by noting that last January was the first month in which the ravages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic were no longer felt, according to Álex Elghoul, director of the province before the CNA.

The leader recalled that 2022 closed with foreign exchange for $7,000 million for shrimp exports, that is, $2,000 million more than in 2021, although he clarified that the low international prices had an impact so that the profits were not greater.

For his part, Andrés Arens, Vice Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, who also participated in the inauguration of the meeting, said that shrimp exports represented 250,000 direct and indirect jobs. He also highlighted the importance of Ecuadorian producers in meeting the requirements to position themselves in the international market, but above all recovering from the different problems that have arisen.
