Production of chicken meat and eggs falls by 30%

No food. Soy and grain come from Bolivia, access to the border is closed due to protests in Puno. Producers look for other alternatives: fish meal or meat meal.

The problem of shortage of inputs for poultry producers in the south persists.
According to several businessmen in the field, the vehicles that transport soybeans, corn, among others that are fed to chickens; They still cannot enter Peruvian territory from Bolivia, due to the blockade of the border with Bolivia, in the Desaguadero section. On the border with the highland country, the passage is restricted.

Lester Cervantes, representative of the Don Quijote poultry farm, explained to The Republic that despite the truces, in Puno the situation is complex and there is no pass. Consequently, given the lack of inputs, the production of chicken meat and eggs is decreasing between 30 and 40%.

Secocha: a disaster that could have been avoided

The company rich chickenwhich is one of the largest in the south, announced in January that it was forced to reduce its production of chicken and pork meat, which would directly affect the jobs of 4,000 families and another 12,000 of indirect way.

Another producer, who preferred to keep his name confidential for this publication, said that the problems came from December 2022 due to strikes in Boliviabut everything has worsened since January 3, when the roads were blocked.

However, he said that he knows from a very good source that contraband soybeans used by informal products are entering.

Alternatives

Soybeans and corn are sources of vegetable protein for raising chickens. Given the shortage, inputs are replaced with others of animal origin such as fish meal, meat meal, offal meal, cotton paste, sunflower tops, cotton paste.
Cervantes explained that these products are much more expensive and some are decreasing their supply.

The north, unlike the south, does not suffer from this problembecause the soy they use enters through the port of Callao and others from the north.

Faced with the impossibility of finding a solution, producers have begun to consider a route through Chile for inputs to enter the country. Lester Cervantes reported on conversations two weeks ago, but there is no agreement because the route would be in very bad condition.

“We can’t take it anymore. Until Saturday and Sunday, the situation is going to get very complicated,” said a producer.

While Cervantes pointed out that if the situation continues like this, there will be no replacement birds.
