Companies in Gipuzkoa are facing this year with “moderate optimism” after a 2022 “complicated to manage”, but which, at the level of activity and results, shows a “positive overall balance”, according to the 2023 economic situation report presented today by the Gipuzkoa Chamber. In addition, Gipuzkoa’s economy is expected to grow between 1 and 1.5%, fundamentally supported by the industrial sector.

This morning the Gipuzkoa Chamber presented the report that includes the results of the Outlook Survey to which several hundred companies in the territory have responded.

28% of companies in the industry expect to improve their turnover compared to the previous year, while 54% expect to match the results. Of the rest of the sectors (construction, commerce and services), only retail trade shows more modest results than in 2022, with 32% of businesses expecting to remain at a lower sales figure, compared to 21% who expect to increase them.

Exports are a source of confidence for the economy of Gipuzkoa. In 2022, exports have set a historical record that has touched the figure of 10,000 million euros for the first time. Looking ahead to this year, despite the fact that forecasts for global economic growth are more modest, the Chamber of Gipuzkoa is confident that exports will once again set records.

Regarding employment, the majority bet for maintenance or for a modest creation. 84% of them advocate maintaining or increasing their workforce in the
year 2023, with more indicating that they will expand their workforces (18%) compared to those indicating a reduction (14%). Industry is the one that points to better results, with commerce being the only sector that predicts a reduction in employment.

The lack of personnel, the need to increase sales in non-European markets, the recovery of margins and the need to continue having a competitive territory are the main strategic challenges that companies in Gipuzkoa identify.
