Italy revokes tsunami alert after devastating earthquake between Turkey and Syria

The tsunami warning declared for the coasts of southern Italy after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake with epicenter between Turkey and Syria has been lifted, at the same time that rail traffic has resumed in the regions of Sicily, Calabria and Apulia, where it had been suspended this morning.

The revocation of the tsunami warning was announced by Civil Protection, which ordered it based on data recorded by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), it said in a statement. Besides, rail traffic has resumed in the three southern regions of the country where it had been suspended and is now proceeding normally, reported the company Ferrocarriles del Estado (FS).

“Rail traffic has resumed normally in Sicily, Calabria and Apulia, where it had been suspended as a precautionary measure since 6:30 in the morning following the alert issued by the Department of Civil Protection. due to the possible arrival of tsunami waves on the Italian coasts“FS explained.

Hundreds of people have died or been injured by the earthquake, which, according to the INGV, had a magnitude of 7.4 with an epicenter between Turkey and Syria and was recorded at 02:17 (01:17 GMT).
