The Japanese company Toshiba has considered, possibly in 2023, dividing into three, after a series of crises at the firm, which includes the departure of its president and a controversial purchase offer.
The Nikkei news organization reported that the three units would deal with infrastructure, appliances and semiconductors. And that they would go public, possibly in two years.
Consulted by AFP, Toshiba He said the option to split their businesses is under consideration, but no decision has been made.
“We are developing a medium-term business plan to increase our corporate value and dividing our businesses is one of the options; however, nothing has been officially decided, ”Toshiba spokesman Tatsuro Oishi told AFP.
Nikkei also assures that the measure could be announced on Friday when Toshiba presents its revenue report and its new medium-term business plan; although the newspaper does not cite sources.
“Toshiba has not made any final decisions to this day. Toshiba will make an announcement if a decision is made that requires disclosure, “another spokesperson told the Bloomberg agency.
Division amid the chaos
Last June, it was decided to remove the chairman of the board, after an independent investigation revealed that Toshiba tried to prevent shareholders from exercising their voice and voting rights.
The decision to split Toshiba’s businesses is seen as a way to maximize the combined market value of the company’s operations, but it could have adverse consequences, warned Hidei Yasuda, an analyst at the Ace Research Institute.
He specified that with the division, Toshiba’s individual segments would potentially be more vulnerable, since the profits of one unit will not be able to cover the losses of another.
