Request for a reply from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock

Luis Alfredo Muñoz, general coordinator of Legal Advice of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, sent to this newspaper a request for a reply to the note of October 27, 2021 entitled “Producers ask the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate alleged alteration of documents during negotiation for the banana box”, published both in the printed and digital versions . The text they request to reproduce is the following:

“On October 22, 2021, in compliance with article 1 of the ‘Law to stimulate and control the production and commercialization of bananas, plantains and other similar musaceae destined for export’ and related legislation, they participated in the Price of Banana Advisory Council, for the producer sector the following delegates – representatives: Eduardo Nieto, Lianne Zoeteweii, Julio Cruz and William Ramón; for the export sector the following people: Iván Wong Chang, Alfredo Contreras, Ángel Punín Borja, Alfredo Montalvo and Leonardo Viteri.

As government authorities, with voice but without vote, the following people participated: Ángel Carranza, Undersecretary of Strengthening of Musáceas; José Manuel Rosas, Director of Strategic Positioning of Musáceas; Juan Xavier Barba, representative of the Musáceas Promotion Directorate. In addition, the lawyers Andrés Rendón and Mercedes Veintimilla were present, as well as the administrative assistance of Norma Veloz, an official of the Undersecretary of Strengthening of Musáceas.

Once the session of said Advisory Council was installed, and after multiple deliberations, the following agreement was expressly and unanimously reached: ‘… to maintain the minimum support price of the banana box at $ 6.25 ′.

The aforementioned session concluded at 12:30 p.m., as can be seen from the attached minutes and has the audio and video recording backups and other documentary and testimonial evidence, which confirm the truth of what was said and what was done ”.

The note includes the statements made by some of the representatives of the banana sector at a press conference, who have repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction on the issue.
