Manta, MANABI
Agro-industrial products such as bananas, tuna, shrimp, various fruits and flowers are what Ecuador has sold to Spain in 2022. For Carmen Sánchez-Laulhe, vice president of the Federation of Binational Chambers (Fecabe), based in Quito, our country sold a figure close to $4,000 million to Spain the year before.
That figure, according to Sánchez-Laulhe, is double what Spain sold to Ecuador last year. The Spanish executive indicated that for Spain Ecuador is a key country and that on average in the last five years the European nation is perhaps the largest investor from the Old Continent in our country.
“The closing expectation for 2022 was in the 2 billion investment, therefore, there is a bet on more than 120 Spanish companies already installed and betting on Ecuador, and I believe that beyond the quantitative, the important thing is also the qualitative, and it is that they are companies that have been looking at the long term and with a lot of commitment to this country”, indicated Sánchez-Laulhe.
Spain is currently investing in Ecuador in different areas, such as health, infrastructure, energy, technology and also a knowledge component, of added value on the consulting side.
Growth of trade between Spain and Ecuador fuels expectations of also attracting greater investment
The Ecuadorian government announced in 2020 that the Spanish consortiums Cobra Zero-E Villonaco and Solarpackteam will execute the Villonaco II wind power projects in Loja and photovoltaic projects in an area close to the land where a fuel refinery was intended to be built in El Aromo in Manta.
These Hispanic companies plan to invest some $400 million. In the project in Manabí, it is estimated that in the first quarter of this year the works of execution of the work will begin.
“It also means that (Ecuador) is making very good use of the trade agreement with the European Union and the different bilateral agreements between the different countries. Spain continues to be the gateway to Europe for Latin American countries, and in that sense I believe that Ecuador is taking full advantage of it”, stressed the Spanish executive.
Exports of Ecuadorian products to Spain rose 12% in October
The opportunity for Ecuador to sell more and new products is latent, recalled Sánchez-Laulhe, including products such as organic cocoa that is widely accepted in the world.
“There is a lot of opportunity for fruits such as pitahaya, which for example are increasingly in demand not only in Spain but also in Europe. There is still a lot of opportunity, although it is already being exported, for Ecuadorian cocoa, which is one of the highest quality worldwide. , there is a lot of opportunity because Ecuador is also increasingly working in the sustainable field, organically and these are products with enormous demand in Europe”, highlighted the vice president of Fecabe.
