Fishermen ask Produce to complete the second fishing season due to a high incidence of juveniles

The Chimbote y Anexo Fishermen’s Union (SPCHA) requested the head of the Ministry of Production (Produce), Sandra Belaúnde, to conclude the second fishing season of 2022 in the north-central zone, in order to guarantee the sustainability of the capture of anchovy.

Through an official letter, the SPCHA explained that after an exploratory fishing since November 22 of last year and due to the official opening of the second season of 2022, an excessive quota of 2 million 283,000 tons was given, despite the fact that a report revealed that as of November 1 the registered acoustic biomass was 6 million 826,839 tons; giving a quota of 34% of the stock, when the registered population density should be 25% of the referred stock. Therefore, the union argues that the given quota puts the sustainability and rational exploitation of the anchovy at risk.

“Opening this second north-central season, during the extraction and landing on the dates worked in the 58 days to date, Species of predominantly one modal (size) that does not exceed 11 centimeters have been recorded and percentages of juveniles of 30%, 40% and up to 50% in each landing”, they detail in the document sent to the owner of the Produces.

Likewise, the union adds that due to the anomalous sea conditions that have been occurring in the coastal marine base of the areas authorized for this second season, “fishing areas have been repeatedly closed due to excessive incidence of juvenile fishing, accompanied by the so-called “shrimp” (krill) and many cases, in volumes greater than those of the anchovy youth; harming the weight of the anchovy and its protein value”.
