Maritime freight to Peru fell 32.8% in December 2022, according to the BCRP

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) reported that import shipping freight to Peru dropped to an average of US$119 per metric ton (TM) as of December 2022, which means a 32.8% drop compared to the same month of the previous year.

On the other hand, imports originating in China they reached an average freight of US$217 per MT, lower by 55.9% during the months in question.

Regarding food freight, these register a moderation, observing an average freight in December of US$51 per MT. This result represents a decrease of 24.3% compared to the last month of 2021.

Internationally, according to Drewry’s World Container Index, in December 2022, the Drewry Container Index globally showed a 77.2% year-on-year decrease, approaching pre-pandemic levels. The cost of transport on the routes that depart from Shanghai to Rotterdam, it registered a drop of 87.5% in relation to the same month of 2021, while those to Los Angeles showed a year-on-year reduction of 80.5%.

It is important to mention that Drewry tracks freight costs for a 40-foot container through eight main routes, including spot rates and short-term contract rates.

Likewise, the Baltic Dry Index, for dry bulk cargo, registered a decrease of 31.7% compared to last December.

The Baltic Dry Index is an index of the Sea freight of dry bulk cargo from up to 20 key shipping lanes around the world, managed by the Baltic Exchange in London.
