Hong Kong and Australia: potential destinations for Peruvian coffee

Peruvian coffee has the possibility of entering the Australian and Hong Kong markets through the promotion that has been carried out on the bean in both nations.

Australia as a new market for specialty coffee

The Peru Promotion Commission for Exports and Tourism (Promperú) has carried out different activities in Australia, market to which in 2020 Peru exported a record figure of US $ 7.4 million, which has gone from fourteenth place in 2009 to eleventh so far in 2021.

Recently, the transnational COFINET, with offices in Australia and Colombia, recently visited San Ignacio, Cajamarca, to identify suppliers, learn about the different profiles and start business with the contract for two containers of specialty coffees, for Australia and New Zealand, with a view to in increasing its volume every year.

COFINET will carry out the first import from Peru, and expects to buy four more containers by 2022.

Hong Kong as a potential destination

The Coffee and Cocoa Committee of the Exporters Association (ADEX) noted that domestic exporters linked to the coffee chain have business opportunities in Hong Kong thanks to the fact that the Consulate General of Peru in that country, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he invited a group of businessmen to participate in the ‘November: Month Of Peruvian Coffee’ initiative.

José Mejía Polanco, president of the committee, explained that a series of activations, tastings and talks on the benefits of aromatic grain are carried out in prestigious hotels, restaurants and coffee shops, where it will be exhibited and marketed. “We have good expectations,” he said.

The companies associated with the guild, including Perunor, Albugat, Incan Forests and Samay Café, sent their samples.

The spokesmen of these companies assured that their objective is to expand the presence of national organic specialty coffee from the regions and boost their sales abroad.
