Half a million homes are still pending a census and it will be done in this month of January 2023

Nail 500,000 homes, 7% of the total 6.7 million planned, are still pending census, announced on January 10 the executive director of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), Roberto Castillo, when conducting a process evaluation. This task of registering half a million homes, which is part of the registration phase of the 2022 Census, it will be fulfilled in the month of January, although at first it had been said that this activity would end in December 2022.

Castillo explained that the main reason why the process was not completed was the lack of census takers. It had been planned to hire 18,000, but 2,000 were missing to recruit. According to the official, this problem occurred due to the lack of security that had been generated in the country by violence in prisons and violent deaths in the street, and that occurred precisely at the time of the census. He recalled that the situation was complex for which even the Government had to declare a state of emergency.

Now, this month, visits will be made to three types of homes: to houses of high-class citizens, to homes in high-risk sites and those with difficult access.

The houses that are going to be registered in January are concentrated especially in Guayaquil, Quito, Machala, Quevedo, Portoviejo and Cuenca.

Additionally, in January there will also be a census quality check and for this, teams of census takers will go to the houses that are currently listed as unoccupied dwellings to verify if that is really their condition.

In any case, Castillo asked the public to “open the door to the census” in this month of January.

On the other hand, he said that after the face-to-face census, more than 400,000 new homes have been identified.

Jorge García, deputy director of INEC, explained that in this new approach a sweeping methodology will be used through brigades. If they are not found at home, they will proceed in a second moment almost immediately to visit at night.

Once the data for the 6.7 million households has been obtained, the analysis and processing of information will begin in February. This second stage will have technical assistance from United Nations experts, such as the Population Fund and also institutions such as Cepal.

Finally, at the end of May, presentation of the first results at the national level.

Information will be released until December. (YO)
