Peru goes again for the 150,000 MT of urea offered as a donation by Morocco

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) announced the resumption of coordination with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to receive the 150,000 MT of urea offered as a donation.

The Vice Minister of Development of Family Agriculture and Agrarian Infrastructure and Irrigation of Midagri, Christian Barrantes, specified that the ministers Nelly Paredes and Ana Gervasi, heads of Agriculture and Foreign Ministry, respectively, will resume dialogue with the Moroccan representation in our country, for the purpose of expedite the delivery process.

“Our minister has taken action in this regard. In fact, she has had coordination with the Moroccan Embassy to see this issue. Soon, there will be a joint meeting with the Agrarian Commission and the Minister of Foreign Relations,” Barrantes said before the Zero Hunger Commission of Congress.

The donation of the fertilizer, announced in September 2022 during the administration of former minister Andrés Alencastre, is currently valued at about US$138 million. For Midagri, everything is in the hands of the Foreign Ministry at the moment, a source specified.

“Obviously, this is an issue that the ministry has taken very seriously, so we will be reporting the steps that have been taken so far. But it has not been left out; on the contrary, it has been taken [la donación de urea] priority,” he added.

Morocco has become a major player in the global urea industry, since the war between Ukraine and Russia decimated the market in the first 10 months of last year.
