MEF proposes returning the IGV to foreign travelers to boost tourism

As part of the recovery plan With Punche Peruthe owner of Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Alex Contreras, announced that his office has been working on measures to promote tourism, a sector that has been affected by the protests carried out in different regions of the country, which have generated a decrease in travelers.

“Tourism, accommodation and restaurants are at 13% of what they were three years ago. The level of tourists, some statistics said, was not even a quarter of what we had before the pandemic. This sector urgently needs additional measures; that is why, in the first instance, S/500 million are being assigned”, declared Contreras Miranda.

In this sense, as one of the measures, the owner of the sector announced that they will present a bill that authorizes the return of the General sales tax (IGV) to foreign tourists who purchase goods in our country.

“We are going to send a bill that returns the IGV to foreign tourists for the goods purchased”; said the official during his presentation at the Economic Commission of Congress.

Another of the measures that the MEF enlists is the promotion of investment and the unlocking of regional airport projects, as well as the replacement of the equipment that was used in the airports affected by protests.

In addition, airport runways and taxiways will be improved, and the safety and quality of services for tourists will be reinforced.

Finally, the reactivation plan contemplates resources to be invested in tourist circuits, such as Machu Picchu, Kuelap, Colca Canyon, among others, in addition to strengthening Migrations.
