79 Cuyabeno oil wells are affected by a new electrical fault

A A new incident due to an electrical failure was registered on December 21, 2022, which again affected the operation of Petroecuador. The fault occurred in the generation plant of the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (Celec EP) in the field Cuyabeno, block 58, located in the province of Sucumbíos, and ended up affecting 79 wells.

The state company did not give details of the electrical problem generated, but the portal First fruits indicated that the problem occurred because a lizard caused a short circuit.

In any case, Petroecuador reported that through coordinated work between the personnel of EP Petroecuador and the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (Celec EP) it was possible to that in less than seven hours 72% of the affected wells are reactivated. Thus, 57 have already been commissioned, but energy is still being fed into the system to start the remaining 22 wells.

Petroecuador’s technical teams work non-stop to complete the startup of the 22 remaining wells in the next few hours. The damage caused by this electrical fault is estimated at around 3,000 barrels of oil that were stopped being extracted.

Experts and authorities agree that there are several problems in the electrical system that feeds the oil sector. On December 11, For example, there was a mega drop in oil production due to an electrical failure on the El Verger Jivino 3 line, operated by Petroecuador. This represented a reduction in production of 56,000 barrels, due to a blackout in 729 wells and a deferral of income for $4.9 million. The problem that existed at that time is that there was an electrical discharge from the atmosphere, but the system did not have the necessary lightning rods to contain said discharge. (YO)
