Inflation closes 2022 with 8.46% in Metropolitan Lima, the highest rate in 26 years

In 2022, the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima, an indicator that measures inflation, increased by 8.46%, the highest rate recorded in the last 26 years. In 1996 it reached 11.84% and in the previous year it reached a rate of 6.43%, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). Above all, the increase in prices of food and beverages, transportation, restaurants, and hotels were the ones that had the greatest impact on this year’s result.

While at the national level, during the year 2022, inflation grew 8.56% due to the increase in prices observed in all the consumer divisions that make up this indicator: food and non-alcoholic beverages (15.22%), transportation (10 03%), restaurants and hotels (9.81%), various goods and services (6.84%), recreation and culture (6.12%), among others.

In mid-December, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) He had warned that the inflation that “had been moderating” could increase due to the closure of businesses in the face of the socio-political crisis. In November, this indicator registered a rate of 8.45% and the MEF’s expectation was that it would fall back to 8%.

The result for the year was determined by the rise in the prices of the consumer divisions: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (15.21%) due to the increase observed in vegetables and tubers, eggs, sugar, bread and cereals, and other food products. .

While transportation, it registered 11.30% due to higher prices in fuels and lubricants, vehicle spare parts, road transportation service, and local transportation; restaurants and hotels (9.49%) due to the increase in menu prices in restaurants, hot à la carte dishes and desserts; and accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (4.23%) due to the rise in electricity and drinking water rates. It should be noted that these four divisions contributed 6.848% to the annual variation in prices.

The divisions of various goods and services (6.66%), recreation and culture (6.66%), health (4.84%), education (3.92%), alcoholic beverages, tobacco also registered growth in prices. and narcotics (3.78%), furniture, articles for the home and ordinary maintenance of the home (3.49%), clothing and footwear (2.46%) and communications (1.44%).

In the year 2022, of the 586 products that make up the family basket, 534 went up in price, 35 decreased and 17 products did not report variation. The products with the highest increase were: huayro potato (135.29%), yellow potato (130.39%), white potato (76.72%), passion fruit (67.57%), color potato (66.67%) , lemon (65.03%), long pasta dry noodles (56.71%) and chicken eggs (47.04%)
