In the face of conflict, a plan to support mining companies is put together

The Ministry of Energy and Mines indicated that in view of the acts of conflict that have been seen in certain areas of the mining sector in the country, a strategic meeting was held in Quito with different state actors to discuss the creation of a strategic plan to give support to mining companies established in Ecuador.

Environment, security and social development, based on cooperation with mining concessionaires, are part of the main axes that were discussed between the Ministry of Energy and Mines, through the Vice Minister Álvaro Ordóñez; the Secretariat for Public-Private Partnerships, represented by Roberto Salas, and members of the Armed Forces. Among them they work together to provide security and a sense of opportunity to mining investments in the country.

Strong growth in mining exports could relegate bananas

Vice Minister Álvaro Ordóñez indicated that the team works in support of a national strategic area such as the mining sector, and within the legal and juridical framework. He asked to do it with a sense of urgency and prioritizing actions.

This State portfolio assured that the Government will continue working to provide security and attract foreign investment in the mining sector, generating jobs and resources that contribute to national development.

Mining is the fourth most important item in Ecuador’s exports after oil, shrimp and bananas. In 2021 they reached $2,092 million, 31% above the goal they had initially calculated and which was $1,600 million and 99% higher than sales in 2020 ($1,050 million). Already in the first semester of this 2022, exports of mining products reached $1,450 million and until last October, in lead and copper concentrate, $1,102.3 million were exported; another $659.6 million in gold and $548 million in other mining products, according to the latest figures provided by the Ministry of Production. Those three items add up to $2,309.9 million. (YO)
