Some roads in Guayaquil and Daule woke up blocked by a peasant strike demanding fertilizers

Some roads woke up blocked on the morning of this Friday, December 16, by protesters who identified themselves as farmers, at the height of Mucho Lote and the Perimetral road, at the height of block 11 of Flor de Bastión, in the northwest of Guayaquil; and they also blocked the road to Puente Lucía, at kilometer 27 of the road to Daule.

With burning tires and empty drums, the alleged producers complained about the high cost of fertilizers in the fields. The measure was called by Richard Intriago, head of the National Peasant Movement, who called the protest the Fertilizer Strike.

Ecuador is the second country most affected by the rise in food prices after Costa Rica, due to a greater dependence on fertilizers whose cost has increased by 60%

Intriago, who is also a candidate for the Guayas Prefecture for the Democratic Left (ID) party, also denounced an alleged government persecution.

“The government of (Guillermo) Lasso continues the political persecution against me and the Peasant Movement, forcing me to take off my shirt as a candidate for Guayas prefect and put on that of a peasant leader again,” who demanded immediate responses from the regime to the crisis of the countryside by ensuring that if farmers run out of fertilizer, cities will run out of food.

Meanwhile, this week the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) reported that the Prosecutor’s Office recovered 64,000 liters of fertilizers on December 9 at the El Rosario farm, located at km 27 of the road to Daule (Guayas), lands of which according to the State portfolio they are owners and that “it is being occupied – without any legal instrument that protects it – by the Federation of Peasant Organizations of the Litoral (Fecaol)”.

Regarding fertilizers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported that they are in chain of custody, led by the Prosecutor’s Office, awaiting the expert reports carried out by said entity. Once this process is finished, with the reports of the expert, the MAG will request the return of the product that will benefit around 3,000 farmers nationwide.

These are Fos Kamin Sl fertilizers, a product with a composition of macronutrients (phosphorus and potassium) made up of amino acids; It is a foliar biostimulant that helps the development of flowering and fruiting of crops.

“The benefited producers are dedicated to the cultivation of rice, hard corn and bananas. In total, 13,000 hectares will be served,” said the MAG, which explained that the delivery will take place once the MAG has the results of the samples taken by technicians from the Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad), which determine the fertilizer status.

Meanwhile, this action generated the response of the national leadership of the Movement, which assured in a statement that the rural sector is experiencing an alarming crisis due to the high cost of fertilizers and indicated that 300,000 liters of fertilizers were delivered free of charge and on their own initiative. organic products to farmers across the country.

“The government has not only ignored this serious problem and, far from appreciating that the peasant organizations do what they do not want or cannot do, they attack the peasants permanently, until reaching the limit this Friday, December 9, of raiding the houses of the peasants attacking their leaders, especially our leader, comrade Richard Intriago”, affirmed the Movement, which assured that the strike this Friday is in response to this action by the regime.
