Two Basque cheeses awarded the ‘Super Gold’ at the World Cheese Awards, in Oviedo

The Saroi Unaiak cheese from the TGT cheese factory in Karrantza, made with Eusko Label milk and the Idiazabal cheese from the Alava cheese factory La Leze have received the award. Up to 4078 cheeses have participated in the 33rd edition of the world cheese competition.

The International Cheese Festival is being held these days in Oviedo (Spain), the most important international gastronomic event of the year, with cheese as the protagonist. Within the framework of the event, the 33rd edition of the World Cheese Awards was held on Wednesday, where two Basque cheeses have received a ‘Super Gold’ medal, specifically, cheese Saroi Unai from TGT de Karrantza cheese factory, made with Eusko Label milk and Idiazabal cheese from Alava cheese factory La Leze.

The prize for the best cheese in the world at the World Cheese Awards has gone to Olavidia goat cheese, from the Quesos y Besos de Guarromán cheese factory (Jaén, Spain).

The most important international cheese competition celebrates its 33rd edition this year, and on this occasion they have participated 4078 cheeses from around the world, 62 of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV).

After the contest, the International Cheese Festival will continue until November 6. The Basque Government’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy, Bittor Oroz, has attended to support the representatives of the Basque Food Chain participating in the fair.

The International Cheese Festival focuses on biodiversity, sustainability, internationalization and innovation to promote the development of the dairy and cheese sector, fostering commercial relationships between producers and buyers.
