The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that will abolish the 4% VAT for six months that is applied to all staple foods, including bread or milk, and will reduce oil and pasta to Coping with the impact of the Ukrainian war and rising inflation.
We review the discount that will be applied to the different food products:
– Basic necessities or super-reduced products
VAT on food in Spain varies between the reduced rate (10%) and the super-reduced rate (4%). Thus, in basic products such as bread, milk, eggs, vegetables, legumes or fruit, the usual 4% VAT will be completely abolished during the next semester.
– Reduced rate food
Meat, fish, oil or pasta are considered reduced rate, and are usually subject to 10% VAT, which from now on will be reduced to 5% in the case of the latter two.
– Other products
There are certain foods that do not fit into any of these categories, such as sugary or alcoholic beverages, to which the general VAT rate of 21% is applied.
Sánchez has affirmed that the Government “is going to ensure that the VAT reductions are immediately transferred to food prices.”
