Petroecuador assures that it managed to recover 90% of the production lost due to an electrical blackout

PS Petroecuador reported that it has managed to recover 90% of the production affected on December 11 by the blackout caused by an electrical discharge that affected 728 wells. The company indicated that the drop in production was 55,439 barrels and that it has already been recovered almost in its entirety, by managing to put most of the wells into production. The data from Petroecuador varies slightly from that reported by the Energy Regulation and Control Agency (ARC) and which spoke of a drop in 56,165 barrels between December 10 and 11.

According to the data of the Energy Regulation and Control Agency (ARC), the Shushufindi block had a loss of 15,651 barrels, going from 82,934 barrels to 67,283. The Auca block went from 75,289 to 59,121 barrels, that is, it registered a drop of 16,168 barrels and finally Sacha fell from 71,066 to 52,709 barrels, that is, a reduction of 18,357 barrels was generated.

In any case, Petroecuador said that the 10% that remains to be recovered would be reached in the coming days. These wells were repaired due to the damage caused by the blackout.

Additionally, Petroecuador recognized that the electrical discharge that affected the El Vergel-Jivino 3 line is operated by the public oil company itself and could not be contained by the Jivino 3 station, since the protections that should have been activated to prevent the spread did not act. The day before, in an official bulletin, the Communications Department of the oil company had indicated that this line was managed by Transelectric, which was wrong information.

In any case, from what is known The problem arose because the grounding protection systems were stolen at the El Vergel- Jivino 3 station. These Stolen protection systems that have not been replaced are a kind of lightning rod that work with a copper cable that is buried deep and that allows the discharges to be absorbed to earth. In October 2021 there was already a similar case along the same line, which caused a drop of 33,000 barrels at that time.

In a new statement issued this Tuesday, December 13, Petroecuador reported that the electrical system of the Amazon District, which is managed by this state oil company, It has more than 40 years of operation and has not had comprehensive maintenance since 2016, Therefore, EP Petroecuador works on short and medium term plans to mitigate this external risk that impacts production losses associated with electrical failures.

Petroecuador added that the state company’s technicians carried out record recovery work that in the preliminary evaluation it should take at least a week, ratifying the commitment that the public company maintains with the country and the Ecuadorians. (YO)
