Logistics companies advance in the race towards sustainability with electric transport

Two of the main logistics business groups in Ecuador are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of electric transport: Grupo Entregas and DHL have recently announced their achievements and future plans to migrate to a cleaner process.

It is that the use of transport that uses fossil fuels is one of the main sources of carbon footprint emissions worldwide, and one of the sectors involved and that generates a high level of pollution is, precisely, the industry courier.

In this way, Grupo Entregas (representing FedEx in Ecuador) together with BYD (Chinese automobile industry) announced on November 28 the entry into operation of its first electric van. This, in order to “evolve towards the sustainable transition to become one of the pioneers in bringing environmentally friendly operability through the use of electric vehicles.” This will be the first step for the progressive change of the entire company fleet to electric vehicles that will be done every year, hoping to complete a fleet of 11 units by 2025.

In the future, the objective of Grupo Entregas is to continue with its investment in sustainable mobility, for which they will invest $658,572 for the acquisition of 11 electric vans, 7 additional charging stations and 2 electric trucks, which would lead them to be every closer to 100% green mobility.

Jorge Burbano, national manager of BYD in Ecuador, explained that the 4.4 m long van has airbags and retro cameras, and has a load capacity of 780 kg, it can recharge its battery in slow mode in 7 hours and in fast mode in 1 hour. “This van has the most modern battery in the world, the Blade Battery, which is 25% lighter, has 30% higher energy density and has a useful life of 15 years,” he said.

The executive makes a comparison of costs and opportunities of this type of car against a conventional car. In this sense, he expressed that despite the fact that the electric vehicle is a little more expensive than the fossil fuel one, the van offers 50% economic savings in energy costs and 40% in maintenance costs. The cost of the energy source is 25% cheaper than a gasoline one.

Regarding results, María Paulina Romo, president of Grupo Entregas, assured that the bicycles have allowed them to be more efficient and productive, since they can cross parks, cycle paths and avoid city traffic. In addition, they have the advantage of being a means of transport in which the pick and plate do not apply.

Grupo Entregas also announced that it also became the first logistics group in Ecuador and the eighth in Latin America to obtain System B Certification. B companies are entities committed to an economic system that benefits the planet and society. In Ecuador there are 25 companies certified by System B.

Meanwhile, DHL Express plans to invest 2 million euros for the acquisition of environmentally friendly vehicles, which seeks to reduce CO2 emissions in the next 10 years.

From 2017 to the present, DHL Express registers an investment of approximately 3.1 million euros in the country, which has been distributed in a green fleet, digitization of processes, sustainable infrastructure, new service points and improvements in its security chain. .

Currently, DHL has 17% electric cars in its fleet, which by the end of 2022 will represent approximately 30%. Its goal is to have zero net emissions by 2050. For this reason, so far this year, Ecuador has allocated close to 300,000 euros in the transformation of its traditional fleet to an electric version, which is part of its global investment objective. of $7,000 million euros in non-polluting logistics by 2030, to become the first company in the sector with 100% responsible operations with the planet.

Francisco Arcos, Operations Director DHL Ecuador, commented that when the company removes a combustion vehicle it means a reduction of 10 tons of CO2 per year, or the equivalent of more than 250 trees needed to absorb them; this represents 3,500 trees that will not be affected per year. In addition, under this initiative, until 2026, DHL will invest 600,000 euros in a charging station with solar panels for our fleet, thus opting for clean and sustainable energy.

Currently, DHL’s operation in the country consists of four daily flights that go to and from Ecuador at the Quito and Guayaquil airports, with more than 200 specialists working in four parts of the country: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and Manta, through through which it is projected to close in 2022 with 820,000 movements between deliveries and collections. These locations follow the same sustainability pattern, as they use LED lights, motion detectors, low-energy consumption equipment, timed push-button taps for water, and other ways to save resources.
