Direct employment in the mining sector exceeded 247,000 workers in October

The direct employment in the mining subsector The national government added a total of 247,195 workers in the month of October, which represents a growth of 0.3% compared to what was registered in the previous month (246,390 people), reported the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) in the latest edition of Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM).

The figure also means an increase of 2.0% in relation to what was reported in October 2021 (242,465 people). Meanwhile, the average employment generated by mining activity in the period from January to October 2022 was 243,546 workers, thus exceeding the annual average of 2021 (228,044 employees) by 6.8%.

Types of jobs generated in mining

Regarding the type of employer, in the tenth month of the yearjobs generated by contractors (mining contractor companies and related companies) accounted for 72.5% of total employment in mining, which means an interannual increase of 1.3%.

Also, the employment generated by the companies (mining companies) represented 27.5% of the total participation, which meant an increase of 3.7% compared to what was declared in October 2021.

Employment in mining by region

At regional level, Arequipa kept the first position with 31,824 workers, holding 12.9% of the total participation. Here the Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde SAA stands out for its largest number of employees.

For its part, Ancash was in second place with 31,356 jobs representing 12.7% of the total; and Moquegua remained in third place with 24,600 workers, reflecting a 10% share.

In Áncash and Moquegua, the highest figures recorded for mining employment correspond to the companies Compañía Minera Antamina SA and Anglo American Quellaveco SA, respectively.
