The H2Med project will be a “renewable hydrogen” corridor between Portugal, Spain and France

Pedro Sánchez, Emmanuel Macron, Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen have appeared together to present the project. It is not clear if it will be able to transport hydrogen produced with nuclear energy.

The Spanish, French and Portuguese States, accompanied by the European Commission, have submitted the H2Med project, the first “great hydrogen corridor of the European Union”, which will connect Portugal, Spain and France for the transport of energy. It will cost €2.85 billion.

Pedro Sanchez, Emmanuel Macron, Antonio Costa Y Ursula von der Leyen They have appeared jointly in Alicante, at the IX EU-MED9 Euro-Mediterranean Summit, and have highlighted that H2Med is “an example of how three countries give a supportive and committed response to the energy crisis”.

Sánchez explained that the corridor is expected to be completed by 2030 and will allow the export of 10% of the total renewable hydrogen that the EU intends to consume on that date.

In addition, he has valued that this agreement represents “a step forward” towards European energy sufficiency.

For his part, Von der Leyen has assured that “it will change the history of Europe and it will be a crucial part of our energy system”.

Nuclear power could fit into the “renewable hydrogen”

The project includes the term “renewable hydrogen”, which leaves the door open for it to transport hydrogen produced with nuclear energy, as the French government intends. The Spanish Executive will try to make it only work with green hydrogen, but the project that they will present in Brussels includes both options.

The H2Med will consist of two routes: the one that will interconnect Portugal with Spain (Celorico-Zamora) and the new submarine hydroduct between Barcelona and Marseille (BarMar) to link the Iberian Peninsula with France.
