Ecuadorian blueberries arrive for the first time in Asia

A harvest of ten hectares of blueberries was the first export that Nobis Fruit Company made to the Asian continent. The fruit is found in the community of Guadalupe, province of Tungurahua.

The blueberry plantation and its development took approximately seven months from its inception to the harvest of the fruit. “For security purposes to carry out the shipment and that it complies with all quality standards, the plants and their fruits are carefully reviewed in each of the steps so that it is in perfect condition. An important component of this project is the close work with farmers and the revitalization of employment in the sector,” the statement said.

According to data from Asia Fruit Logistica Media Studios, the Asian market still represents a small portion of global blueberry consumption, with less than 8% worldwide participation for this fruit.

“Based on the experience we have selling exotic fruits and with an already developed client portfolio, it was a great opportunity to open a market in Asia and send our first shipment there. Ecuador is being included in the map of producers and opening new markets in the world”, mentions Luis Ponce, general manager of Nobis Fruit Company.

Through this management, according to the company, the increase in demand is being promoted and “that the curiosity of many importers worldwide is aroused.” They also open up the possibility of attracting more attention to foreign investment, where “they see Ecuador as a good prospect for future investments.”

By 2023, production is expected to double to 20 hectares.
