The Regulatory Council of the Qualified Designation of Origin (DOCa) Rioja will study on Friday, in a plenary session, the specific legal measures that it will adopt against the decision of the Basque Government to grant temporary national protection to the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Viñedos de Álava.

In a note, the Regulatory Council of the DOCa has reiterated “its outright rejection” of this protection, and has specified that it is provisional until the European Commission determines whether or not it gives the green light to the file, which it received last May. .

“It constitutes an administrative act in itself that can be challenged,” according to the Regulatory Council, which has highlighted that it is a judicialized matter and to which the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country has not yet responded.

The project to create this PDO, he said, “has come up against an extensive dossier of allegations, an appeal and a contentious-administrative appeal filed by this Regulatory Council.”

The Regulatory Council, as it stated at the time, “maintains the firm intention of exhausting all avenues against what it considers an illicit use of the goodwill of the DOCa”, made up of La Rioja, the Basque Country and Navarra.

It has insisted that, in the face of any action that undermines or represents a threat to any of the aspects it oversees or to its members, “it will combat it using all available legal and administrative weapons.”
