Ecuador launched this Tuesday, within the framework of the International Tourism Day, the “Digital Nomads” campaign, in order to strengthen the nomad visa modality that has been in force since April this year and is aimed at foreign digital nomads who seek temporarily acquire residence and promote the attractions of the country.
The campaign was officially presented by the Minister of Tourism, Niels Olsen, at an event in Quito. The new nomad visa lasts from three months to two years and is expected to attract 8,000 to 10,000 foreigners each year.
During the launch, Olsen highlighted the recovery of the tourism sector after the years of the pandemic and blamed the investment that has been made.
“We have already approved a budget of $47.5 million to invest exclusively in the promotion of Ecuador,” said the minister, who assured that tourism has grown 103%, in foreign exchange income, if compared to the first quarter of 2022 with the same period of 2021.

“It is an invitation for you to live in Ecuador and discover all the good that our country has to show, boosting our economy,” said the Ministry of Tourism, which drew up a list of 178 countries for whose nationals the nomadic visa is available.
Juan Carlos Holguín, Chancellor of the Republicindicated that in many countries the trend is to work remotely and this means having a vision of experiences, of knowing the world.
“The nomadic visa consists of the possibility of giving the facility to a foreigner, a foreigner, who wants to come to work from our country with a vision of remote work and at the same time take advantage of all the advantages that our Ecuador offers,” Holguín explained. .
Meanwhile, the list and the requirements for this visa are available on the page www.ecuador.travel. Although Olsen announced that among the requirements is to cancel the costs of the procedure that add up to $ 460.
The other requirements are:
- Demonstrate income from foreign sources of at least three unified basic salaries per month, from the three months prior to the visa application, or have a total of 36 unified basic salaries for each year.
- Documents that show that you work or provide services for companies or people abroad and that your work will be remote. You can also apply if you own a business or company registered and domiciled abroad.
- Have health insurance under the terms established in the article referring to the temporary resident of annuitant.
The “Digital Nomads” campaign is one of the country’s international promotion strategies that joins the Ecuador Film Residency program, which at the same event awarded its first winners: Luis Cañizares, Christopher Pozo and Cristian Ormaza.
The program was launched in June 2022 and in just 54 days it achieved more than 450 applications from content creators interested in participating and promoting the experiences that Ecuador offers.
