The agricultural census began in Galapagos and will be carried out in the rest of the country from 2023

The National Agricultural Registry (Renagro), which has not existed since 2000, began in the province of Galapagos, where it is estimated that information will be collected from 1,176 agricultural production units (UPA), in the cantons of Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristóbal and Floreana Island, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).

This stage, which will last from August to next September, is carried out with the collaboration of the Governing Council of the Special Regime, taking advantage of an agreement signed with the MAG, which revealed that the Continental Ecuador phase is following the procedures established to obtain financing from the French Development Agency. The census is expected to cost $30 million.

$ 30 million will cost the agricultural census that will take place until 2024

This phase, on the continent, is scheduled for next year. This registration will be carried out in all the agricultural production units (UPA) of the country. The UPA are extensions of land, totally or partially dedicated to agricultural production, and that are considered as an economic unit.

With it, it will be known how many producers really exist, how they produce, what they produce, where they produce.

Meanwhile, to carry out the National Agricultural Registry, a team made up of 33 people is located in the rural areas of Galapagos. The pollsters will visit each of the producers on their land and conduct a survey.

The head of the MAG, Bernardo Manzano, stressed that with the information obtained from Renagro, State policies will be made, attached to the reality of Ecuadorian agriculture and for the benefit of small and medium farmers.

The data collection that will be collected in the country, both from the agricultural and livestock chain, is carried out in Ecuador after 22 years.

In 2000, the III National Agricultural Census was carried out on a national scale, which included a questionnaire of 110 questions applied to 162,818 UPA.

In this new opportunity, the brigadistas will approach the productive units (farms or land) at a national scale, including the Insular region, to collect data on types of cultivation, irrigation, environmental issues, employment and family farming. The definition of variables is still being worked on to prepare the definitive questionnaire. (YO)
