In the first half of the year, net sales (domestic and exports) continue their recovery trend that they already showed at the end of last year, closing 2021, with $198,794 million, an increase of 22.1% compared to with the $ 162,762 million of net sales of 2020.
According to figures presented by the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries, from January to May of this year sales reached $83,271 million, 17.7% more than those registered in the same period of 2021 ($70,740 million).
Banana and wood fail to improve exports like the rest of Ecuador’s main products
Of this total, domestic sales represent $70,115 million, while exports were $13,156 million.
Regarding national sales, the participation by economic activity is led by trade, with $6,957 million (39.7%); followed by manufacturing, with $2,886 million (16.5%); oil and mines, with $2,128 million (12.1%); agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing, with $1,418 million (8.1%); basic supplies and telecommunications, with $736 million (4.2%), and the other sectors, with $3,395 million (19.4%).
According to the report, Pichincha is the province that leads the sales and exports map, with $5,273 million in exports, 34.8% more than in the same period of 2021; and with $28,321 million in local sales, which represent an increase of 16.2% compared to the first five months of 2021.
Guayas follows, with $4,997 million (+24%) in exports and 24,198 million in local sales (+16%).
The third province in importance is Manabí, with $843 million in exports and $2,486 million in local sales, which represents an increase of 28.7% and 14.2%, respectively. They are followed by El Oro, with $586 million (+9.1%) in exports and $2,124 million (+13.5%) in local sales; and Azuay, with $98 million (+9.2%) in exports and $3,810 million (+13.7%) in local sales.
While in the rest of the provinces, in total, exports reached $1,359 million and local sales reached $9,177 million, which generated an increase of 37% and 14% respectively in relation to January-May 2021.
Miguel Ángel González, president of the Guayaquil Chamber of Commerce (CCG) and the Ecuadorian Business Committee (CEE), confirmed that billing at the national level had already shown signs of recovery at the end of 2021. “Since then, we have observed how Throughout each month of 2022, turnover grew by 15% year-on-year. This same behavior was evident in the commercial sector”, assured the manager. “In the second half of the year, we expect billing levels to maintain this same dynamism. Our estimates point to national billing growing 12% compared to 2021″, he added.
‘Do not charge VAT’, a strategy that more and more businesses apply to attract customers and increase their sales
Regarding non-mining and non-oil exports, the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (Fedexpor) explained that 50% corresponds to products from the aquaculture and fishing sector, 38% to the agricultural-agro-industrial sector and the rest is made up of of manufactures. During the first five months of 2022, the growth of the aquaculture and fishing sector stands out at 57%, when compared to that of 2021.
Until May, the first ten export products, made up mainly of products from the food supply —shrimp, bananas, fish, flowers, cocoa, wood, among others—, totaled more than $6,617 million in foreign sales. Asia, North America and Europe are the markets where the majority of consumers of Ecuadorian exports are found.
